Assessments

Assessments are an essential part of the Speech and Language Therapy process as they allow the Speech and Language Therapy team to gather information about children’s skills and the difficulties and challenges they may experience.

The most appropriate type of assessment will be chosen by our team. All of our assessments are carried out by qualified and experienced Speech and Language Therapists.

Our Speech and Language Therapists will typically carry out an initial assessment to understand a child/young person’s speech, language and communication needs.

We may use formal and informal assessments as well as observation.

Formal assessments are those that provide information on how a child/young person’s skills compared to others in their age group. They can also indicate whether the child/young person’s speech, language and communication skills are delayed or disordered.

Informal assessments/observation is a much more flexible way to assess a child’s speech, language and communication in different environments and in ways to suit them.

In consultation with the child/young person’s educational setting and family, we will agree where the assessment will take place.
