Halton Community – An Introduction to Communication Boards/Low Tech Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

Event Date:

June 13, 2024

Event Time:

9:00am

Event Location:

Box 9, Halton Stadium, Lowerhouse Lane

What will this training session cover?

AAC is a term that’s used to describe various methods of communication that can help people who are unable to use verbal speech to communicate. It refers to tools and strategies that can enhance speech or provide completely different means of communication. AAC can be aided (using a device) or unaided (no means needed), such as sign language or gestures.

Augmentative communication represents the addition of different elements to the speech to support it and help the information be transmitted clearly and more efficiently.

Alternative communication is a way of expressing thoughts, ideas, feelings, desires, and needs without using speech.

The two terms are combined to convey the system of communication methods used to supplement or even substitute natural speech for those who cannot use it efficiently.

Using AAC tools makes such a difference for children where there is an opportunity to improve their communication skills. Such devices are used in different therapies for children to practice their language interactively. It is also a great strategy to make conversations evolve a lot quicker than they would without it.

This session will focus on ‘low tech’ category tools; these are non-electronic devices, usually represented by straightforward communication books or boards. Each user selects letters, words, phrases, symbols, objects, or images to transmit a message.

Who is this training session for?

This session is suitable for all members of the children’s workforce in the borough of Halton, who support children in early years environments including Nursery Practitioners, Childminders, Early Help Officers, members of the Health Visiting Team and such like.
